Brim
Over the years, ice cream serving sizes have increased while the cone has remained the same. The excess ice cream melts and flows over the cone and onto your hands. I wanted to redesign the ice cream cone to prevent such mishaps while retaining the cone’s unique character.
Process
I tested potential solutions by modifying existing ice cream cones. I found that simply extending the lip of the cone was the most effective at preventing drips.
Rough sketches allowed me to explore the best way to incorporate an extended lip. I also thought about different ways to reinforce the cone structurally, adding ribs and pockets to prevent the lip from collapsing under the weight of the ice cream.
Final Design
The final design sees an increase of the brim of the standard cone, allowing the user to enjoy a double or triple scoop without worrying about drips.
Brim employs ribs that supports the weight of the ice cream and also creates pockets to contain drips. This prevents the liquid from flowing over when the cone is turned.
